Meet the 2021 selected startups: eSmart Systems

eSmart Systems is transforming the way the world’s leading energy providers inspect and maintain critical infrastructure

Our flagship product Grid Vision® – an AI-assisted, end-to-end powerline inspection management tool – was first released in 2016 and is currently in use by more than 50 utility companies worldwide.

eSmart Systems is based on more than 25 years of international experience in establishing and operating knowledge-based, leading IT and energy-related companies targeting global markets.
eSmart Systems originates from the renowned Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) environment. The company was founded in 2012 by an experienced team previously responsible for large IT service exports including delivery of the world’s first power exchange to Nord Pool, the Nordic Power Exchange, in 1991. Since 2012 the company has grown rapidly and currently consists of 110 employees with offices in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, UK, and USA.

Grid Vision® is a next-generation software solution for powerline inspection and grid maintenance that turns images and visual inspection data into actionable asset insight and automated inspection processes. The platform utilizes collaborative Artificial Intelligence (AI), a method for combining the best qualities of machine learning and subject matter experts to achieve fast and accurate inspections, while automatically training the AI for long term success.

Grid Vision® supports utilities to transform how they maintain and inspect their overhead power lines from traditional inspection to digitizing their infrastructure assets in one central tool. Our asset centric approach to overhead line inspections connects visual data to real assets which provides insights and detects defects resulting in more efficient grid inspections, reduced failure rates, reduced costs, safer inspections, and extended asset life.

So far eSmart Systems has been able to empower more than 50+ utilities globally to digitize and transform their overhead line inspections by leveraging collaborative AI-powered image recognition technology to enable operations and maintenance teams to reduce time on inspection tasks and help digitize their asset inventory for better planning and maintenance. In general, we are empowering the engineers with insightful information to make better informed decisions, and we reduce the carbon footprint by avoiding outages and manual inspection work.

eSmart Systems has also developed an Innovation Hub where we work alongside utilities on the next generation of Grid Vision. Grid Vision 5D will extend our asset management capabilities to include predictive modeling with information from a multitude of advanced sensors to support risk-based maintenance and inspection planning.

We have recently extended our capabilities by adding Verico to our portfolio, this will complete our offering with inspections of substations, with field apps for data collection, web-based software for visualization of asset information and APIs for integration with legacy systems, in addition to bringing deep asset inspection domain knowledge.

We are excited to have been selected in the Free Electrons Program. Our Grid Vision solution helps utilities digitize their inspection process by leveraging Collaborative AI-powered image recognition technology to enable utilities to carry out more efficient grid inspections with reduced failure rates, safer inspections and extended asset life. We are looking forward to collaborating with global utilities in the next stage of this program.
